One of the highlights of the tourism and Timeshare trade calendar, World tourism Day rolls around once again, this time with a “green” theme, “tourism and sustainable energy.”
Spain has been selected for the 2012 conference, which will take place in Maspalomas on the Canary Islands on September 27th. This location feels more than apt as the Canary Islands have been a prime Tourism destination for many years, being one of the most coverted locations for buying timeshares in Spain.
Isabel Borrego Spanish Secretary of State for Tourism, proudly acknowledges that Spain’s hosting of the celebrations, was fitting given the reputation for Tourism and Timeshare success as “one of the world’s top tourism destination and a global leader in renewable energies”.
In addition to the usual proceedings at the conference, the focus will be uniting the tourism sector and the concerns of renewable energy to ensure the successful future of tourism. As finite resources like fuel become the focus of much debate, it is seen that alternatives need to be found to maintain the Tourism and Timeshare industries.
With the constant squeeze on fuel prices the costs of travel have been steadily rising and more often than not the consumers are being forced to take on some of the extra expense, it is a readily acknowledged problem and the tourism industry is looking towards “greener” and more efficient solutions.
“Tourism is at the forefront of… [the] most innovative sustainable energy initiatives,” Taleb Rifai the UNWTO (United Nations World Tourism Organization) Secretary-General announced. “One only has to think of the investments being poured into renewable energy sources for aviation, or the energy technology solutions implemented in hotels around the world, to know that sustainable energy is a major priority for the sector.”
Mr Rafai did not stop there; he also went on to note that the pursuit of renewable energy has created new jobs in Tourism and Timeshare sectors as well as the energy industry. “The message at the heart of World Tourism Day 2012 is there these initiatives and commitments are not only helping to protect the environment, they are also creating economic opportunities and jobs for millions, whether in tourism, energy or other sectors”.
Spain is part of the top five countries currently investing in renewable energies worldwide with “20% of the energy consumed in Spain [coming] from renewable sources,” said Ms. Borrego, speaking at the 2012 conference announcement.
